The company has had a long history in Singapore, beginning with its first project, the Maruzen Oil Refinery, in 1962, followed by the Jurong Shipyard Dock and Wharf. For almost a decade the firm had been scouting for an anchor in the region. “The late Dr Shoichi Kajima tasked us with a mission to establish our headquarters in Singapore,” said Shuichi Oishi, CEO of Kajima Development, in a statement on August 4.
Kajima Development and its local construction arm, Kajima Overseas Asia Singapore, began construction on the project in August 2020. Despite the disruption to construction due to the pandemic, the building was completed and the Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) obtained on March 31.
The building was designed by a team of Kajima’s architects and engineers from Japan. It “embodies Kajima’s commitment to a sustainable, connected and future-ready Singapore”, according to the firm.
Kajima Technical Research Institute Singapore, which has been based in Singapore since 2013, will drive all R&D at the hub. Its mission is to develop innovative solutions to climate change and urbanisation challenges.
