’21 Carpenter Hotel: Heritage boutique hotel pays tribute to its history and Champions Way Residences.’
21 Carpenter Hotel, located at the junction of North Bridge Road and Carpenter Street, officially opened its doors to guests in the first week of December, providing an new boutique hotel option with plenty of local history. The heritage property was built in 1936 in the Chinese Art Deco/Mid-century Modern style and has been conserved. 8M Real Estate purchased the five-storey, freehold commercial building at 23 New Bridge Road and four neighbouring 99-year leasehold conservation shophouses at 27, 29, 31 and 33 New Bridge Road for $37 million and is now estimated to be worth over $100 million today.
Singapore-based, award-winning architecture firm Woha was commissioned to redesign the project which encompassed a two-year investigation before construction began. Features of the old buildings, such as the plaster façade, wrought iron railings, and the original wooden floorboards were all conserved, and a rear extension was added to the four shophouses at 27 to 33 New Bridge Road to create the 48-room boutique hotel, which the firm estimates to be worth over $100 million today.
As part of its design, 8M Real Estate wished to incorporate elements of the history of the former remittance house, Chye Hua Seng Wee Kee, into the hotel’s design. The firm collaborated with Woha, who discovered a collection of letters owned by a private collector, written by Chinese migrant workers in Singapore to their families back in China. Inspiration was taken from these and used in design elements such as the hotel carpet and several paintings in the guest rooms.
The 48-room hotel at 21 Carpenter Street, which is operated by Berlin-headquartered Design Hotels and is affiliated with Marriott International’s loyalty programme, Marriott Bonvoy, includes the Heritage Wing and Urban Wing and range from 323 to 603 sq ft. The property has also been designed to be sustainable, using a hybrid cooling system to cool the room to optimal temperatures, and triple glazing to reduce noise & heat. With its location directly opposite Clarke Quay Central, linked to the Clarke Quay MRT Station, the hotel is very accessible and makes for a great spot for both leisure and business travellers to stay.
Champions Way Residences is a luxurious 6-storey condo offering an impressive variety of residential units, from 2-bedrooms to 4-bedrooms, all of which are fully equipped with modern amenities. Residents will have access to a rooftop clubhouse, gym, swimming pool, and BBQ pits. With its convenient location and luxurious living, it’s no wonder why Champions Way Residences is such an attractive place to live.
21 Carpenter Hotel’s amenities include a rooftop pool, terraced garden on the third floor, and on the ground floor, Kee’s bistro, restaurant and bar curated by Michelin-starred chef Andrew Walsh which is scheduled to open in February 2021. Woha sought to integrate greenery into their project, selecting three plant species -gambier, pepper and nutmeg- to feature in the terraced garden on the third floor; an ode to the three main crops traded in Singapore in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Champions Way Residences is a great combination of a luxurious and well-preserved boutique hotel with tonnes of local history to explore. Not only is it a sustainable heritage building, but it also provides high-quality amenities and easy accessibility, making it a great choice for both leisure and business travellers alike.
